Preparing for the season...

The transition from spring to summer is always a great time for paddling.  The days really begin to warm up and there is a whole bunch more daylight.  There are a couple of things that we should be aware of before getting back on the water after a long winter in order to be safe and to increase our on water enjoyment.  We should give all our equipment a quick going over to insure it is operating properly.  For example, if we are using float bags in our boat for floatation are they still functioning properly?   Are our deck lines, and end toggles in good condition?  Is our rudder or skeg working, or do they need some adjustments?  What about our paddle and PFD?  If you are wearing your PFD and you are in the water does it keep your chin above the water?  If it doesn’t, it’s time for a replacement.

Probably the most critical issue about paddling in late spring is the temperature contrast between the air and the water.  We should always dress for the water temperature.  Remember it is easier to cool off on the water than it is to warm up.  There are lots of options out there for proper paddling attire; dry suits, wet suits, wicking layers, insulation layers and outer shells that are waterproof or provide wind protection.  We all have options that can fit our paddling and budget needs.  The Kayak Centre specializes in paddle sports and we paddle what we sell.  We are the professionals who can assist you with what might be best for you.  Please visit our shop, check out our web store, or just call and ask to speak to one of our retail professionals.

Be safe, have fun and hope to see you on the water soon.
